Amazon Appstore

Following BlackBerry’s announcement that it’ll package Amazon Appstore together with its new BlackBerry 10.3 operating system, Amazon followed up with an equally welcomed news of its own. The Amazon Appstore since July 31st has been available to 41 additional markets (including Malaysia), making the Appstore available in a total of 236 countries and territories.

As always, not every single app available in the US will be on the Malaysian Appstore. There will be local laws and licensing restrictions preventing some apps to be available here, however the bulk of it will.

Amazon Appstore 40 new markets

The following are the 41 new markets Amazon Appstore is available in, which include Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore:

Algeria, Djibouti, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Qatar, Tunisia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bahrain, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Niger, Senegal, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh, Gambia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, United Arab Emirates, Brunei Darussalam, Guinea, Malaysia, Oman, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Maldives, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Chad, Jordan, Mali, Palestinian Territories, and Tajikistan.

You must be wondering why is the Appstore any relevant to us in Malaysia, since we can’t buy any of Amazon’s Kindle or Fire devices, and Android devices usually already come with Google Play Store. Not much really, but there are two points it has going for it. Firstly, Android users will get another channel to download and purchase apps, because sometimes it will have deals that are not available on Google. Secondly, this will be such an important turning point for BlackBerry 10 devices, where in the past we’re stuck with the horrible selection on BlackBerry World, and sideloading of Android apps were only possible for some BAR files. With this strategic partnership, we may finally see BlackBerry 10 devices gain some steam, and the Amazon Appstore more widely adopted.
