I want to report on a good news that will benefit BlackBerry 10 users and Android enthusiasts alike. On June 19th, shortly after the unveiling of Amazon Fire Phone, BlackBerry announced its partnership with the retail giant to include the Amazon Appstore together with BlackBerry 10.3 operating system that will be released this Fall, probably alongside the launch of BlackBerry Passport that is said to happen on September 24th, 2014.

This is great news for BlackBerry 10 users as it will greatly expand the access they have to thousands of popular apps and games previously only available on Fire OS, which is based on Android. Previously, it is possible to sideload a few Android apps on BlackBerry 10 OS, but these apps have to first be converted from APK to BAR, and most of them do not work very well to begin with.

There are more than 240,000 Android apps in Amazon Appstore, giving BlackBerry 10 users access to popular apps like Groupon, Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga, and Minecraft.

A strategic move like this enables BlackBerry the company to align its developer program to a renewed focus of placing an emphasis on developing vital enterprise solutions and productivity applications instead.

BlackBerry’s Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen said, “Making the Amazon Appstore available on BlackBerry 10 devices will help BlackBerry continue to meet two essential needs: greater app availability for our smartphone users and enhanced productivity solutions for enterprises. We’ve listened to our customers and have taken this important step to deliver on their needs, while executing on our strategy.”

Both Amazon and BlackBerry will be working with the app developer community to help them migrate their apps to Amazon Appstore in preparation for the BB10.3 launch. By doing so, they will get to benefit Appstore’s more powerful promotional tools, and an overall better experience, compared with the awful BlackBerry World. This includes Appstore Developer Select, as well as Amazon Coins incentives, the Developer Promotions Console, and the ‘Free App of the Day’ program.

BlackBerry also introduces a new corporate application partner program for enterprise developers, independent software vendors, and system integrators. This is designed get more enterprise apps to leverage on BlackBerry 10.
